Title: Your Top-Ten Favorite Bumps
Post by: mongo on March 24, 2010, 11:24:36 PM
Hey guys! I was thinkin' of something cool we could do here to just ramble around as a community. So, the question's pretty simple: What are your top-ten favorite bumps? Just thought it'd be fun to see the lists and generally jabber on about bumps :-D. In my case, it's likely some of the bottom spots would shift around (too many great ones!) but I think this is a pretty nice and accurate list, so... here goes!

Mongo's Top Ten Favorite Bumps
10. WS Academy (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1051)
This bump is so odd, it's super memorable to me. Love the comments, the music and the all-around infomercial feel with that crazy [as] twist.
09. Winter for Trees (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/2026)
The first time this one aired, I literally laughed 'til I cried! Such a bizarre (even if brilliant and accurate) observation.
08. Fishy Bump (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1900)
Cool, clean animation and a really chill vibe. Wasn't expecting it by a long shot. Goes great with the song, too.
07. When Did You Stop Remembering? (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1815)
Bizarre message with excellent artwork.
06. Ghost in the Shell Intro (New Bump) (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/429)
My favorite anime with a kickass animation. Reminds me of the old school AcTN bumps. Very fun bump to watch, fits the show's mood perfectly.
05. Inferiority Complex Entrance (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/115)
Love the picture, and the strangely cheery song fits quite nicely too!
04. Animated Philosophy (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/505)
This one just goes great with the lineup. Great idea, and I really dug the monochromatic thing.
03. SPF 4000 Club (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/475)
I had no idea these songs fit so perfectly together! Really well thought out.
02. ATHF Intermission (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1806)
This one definitely deserves to be aired more than once. Love the kitschy elevator music.
01. Kill Your Feet (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1968)
The ever-elusive bump! I'd been searching like mad for this one to no avail until Numy requested it and had it re-aired :-D. (Thanks, Numy!) This one is just hilarious and caught me completely off-guard.

I really hate the whole 5-second bump thing (bumps just have to be 10 seconds imo... crazy, I know) but they've made some really cool ones as well, so I'll have to give the devil his due.
Top Five 5-Second Bumps (Honorable Mention)
05. Medical Arts Chat (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/839)
Great picture, and the cutouts were a great idea. Really liked the cutout collection. And "Wait a Minute" is VERY infectious.
04. April Fools 2009 1 (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1406)
Honestly, this was pretty much the same thing I thought that day.
03. Williams Provision Co. (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/2190)
Sick old-school graphic, and a really fitting Bibio beat.
02. AS and You: Otters (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/2125)
I don't know what the hell this has to do with [adult swim], and in this case I dig that.
01. Last Chance Saloon v2 (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/838)
The perfect song for this bump, especially with it being the last one of the night at that time.

Well, enough about me! What do y'all dig?

I want to complement Mongo on the "WS Academy" and "Ghost in the Shell Scroll" bump choices. :-)  I forgot all about that G.I.T.S. intro.  You're right about the "Old School Anime" scroll bumps being similar to the more recent GITS Intro, Mongo.  Is that bump from two years ago?  I want to say 2008.  Also, T.96 had some interesting/nice vintage choices, such as, "Winter is Killing Us", also, the great Five Deez tracks, "Blue Film Reel" and "Bear/Chainsaw". :-)  Here's my top 15.  I'll start with Number one.

1. No Banking, No Loitering
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1843

2. You Could Be Here
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1832  This bump reminds me so much of the time of year that it aired.  The photo looks like it was taken somewhere in the Mid-West on a hot, dry, late Summer's day, either in August or very early September.  I also love the image of the escalator guy from Extreme Music.

3. Gone to San Diego
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1908  Another late summer feel.

4. ACTN Green One Handed/Armed Guy
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1805  It's late night "Hypno-Vision".

5. //SHINJUKU-KU// TOKYO 04.15 PM
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/61

6. //MINATO-KU// TOKYO 12.27 AM
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/58  It just doesn't feel like Saturday night anymore without this.  For that matter, I should also at least give a shout out to "Vibe Units" too.

7. //FUJIYAMA// 06.02 AM
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1803 A reflective moment of peace.

8. ACTN Owl
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1916

9. Samurai Champloo Fan
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1905

10. Rescue Lion
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1862  This is a great example of what the groove was on A.S. just a few short years ago.  Psyche O., Madlib/Loopdigga (Beats/Music for Wild Child), Five Deez, etc.  The J. Dilla cuts carried on this recent tradition for awhile but lately every thing's been a lot less about organic sounding beats and acoustic music, laced tastefully with Hip-Hop or Jazz/Electronica, and a lot more about technical electro fuzz and Midi/8 Bit sounds.  I prefer the latter.  That's just me.

11. ACTN Character Spread
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/70

12. ACTN 25c!
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/14  To say that this music isn't hip is to not know the meaning of the word. 8-)

13. Es Muy Fuerte
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/564  What is this music:?

14. Shoot the Freak
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1921  The Freak comes out at night, late, on A.S. or at least he used to. :-(

15.  Happy Labor Day - Top Floor
http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/232  Why are not these Labor Day bumps running on Labor Day weekend/week anymore?  Do let's put them back on this year!

Thanks Ryan! The Ghost in the Shell Scroll is from 2007. I have it as March 2nd, don't know exactly when it started showing but it's definitely close to that date; I remember watching it in the first run and capturing it in the second. You got a real nice list going on! AcTN 25c was one of those that surprised me when I didn't see it on my list; back on the old days before the forums and everything that was my most-seen bump. I really miss Shoot the Freak, I remember feeling very weird when I saw it the first time (and not noticing the Adult Swim tag until the 3rd time I saw it!). And I wholeheartedly agree, as much as I liked the 2007 tilt-shift bumps, it's just strange not having the Tokyo snaps on Saturdays. One of the many, many reasons I'm glad BW's around :-D. And man, that San Diego remaster is such a huge leap over the old master! Gotta thank Beefy again for that one, it looks so crisp now .

I felt the same awkward/weird feeling seeing "Shoot the Freak" too!  It would air at something like 5AM, until just recently.  So, you're half awake, half asleep, and then that strange/funky groove and vibe kicks in, matched with the fading walls and decay of the "Shoot the Freak" exhibit at old Coney Island.  It was a trip.  You don't need drugs.  Not ever.  Just watch Adult Swim.:-)

Great question, and good answers so far.  I started jotting down a list, but I want to hold off on posting for a couple days, because if I post now I'll inevitably remember one or two later that I didn't think about.

My contribution to the conversation though -- all three of you listed one bump in particular that I had never seen, but really liked:

Mongo's Fishy Bump (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1900) -- Very relaxed and smooth.  I also like the songs Teen Beat Ocean and Arpeggio, also from Jackson and his Computer Band, and also used in AS bumps if I'm not mistaken.  Any more history on the Fishy Bump out of curiousity... like when it aired and before what show/shows?

Terrorist's Snowy Town holiday bump (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/2018) -- When reading the question, one of the things I tried to think of were holiday/seasonal bumps that especially stood out, but I can't think of any off the top of my head that I like better than your pick here.

Ryan D. -- You and I seem to have similar tastes, because when thinking about favorites, my first two thoughts were the Japanese //Location// bumps and the ACTN scrolling bumps.  I do not believe I have ever seen ACTN 25c! (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/14), however.  I'm not sure how I've missed it all these years, because it is a masterpiece.  Did this fall out of rotation after 2004ish, anyone know?

Can't wait to see what more people come up with.

I have it pegged down as Sunday, May 27th, 2007. Aired only once or so. Don't have the show info, though. And yeah, Teen Beat Ocean and Arpeggio have been used a few times. The "Smash" album is quite cool  :-D.

To be honest with you, Jeff, I'm not sure that I ever saw "ACTN 25c!" on the air either. :| :-)  I think I may have but I mostly remember re-discovering the bump here at BW.  I'm pretty sure that you've guessed right, about the end of its rotation being "2004ish".  I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's definitely no older than 2003 and went out of rotation by 2005.  Maybe Numy or someone else could shed some light.  I'd actually like to know the year(s) that this was in mix too. :|

I'm not entirely sure on the timeline either, but I'm pretty sure it didn't air for long. I remember watching it once on I think 2003 but don't remember watching it a lot. I'll wait for Numy, it's pretty likely she knows :-D.

Good question!  All I know is it had to still be airing in January 2005 because that particular bump is one of the first ones I put on the site.  It actually might be the very first one (http://www.bumpworthy.com/forum/index.php?topic=892.msg5882#msg5882) I uploaded, but my memory from that time is hazy (http://web.archive.org/web/20050518023629/http://www.bumpworthy.com/).  :)  I made my first recordings back in very early 2005.  I can't believe that bump is still using my original video!  It's so bad!  You can tell most of the ones that I uploaded because the audio is super loud and the quality is grainy at best.  I wish someone had some more quality recordings from back then.

Oh well, my list to come soon.. but I have a thesis to write, which is probably more important than me posting on the forum... right now..

, it's a whole lot better than nothing!!! I still face-palm when I think I didn't tape the recent (well, 2007-ish) reruns of the two Tokyo snaps Ryan mentioned (in fact, I still think I should dig through some backups, it's hard to believe I didn't tape them!). But some of them look really good, I think, and that's one of them .

Put forth a bit of deliberation and here's what I came up with.  Some have been listed already, but I think that just goes to show how universally liked some of the bumps can be.

1. //FUJIYAMA// 06.02 AM http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1803
Can't say quite why, but for whatever reason I have always loved this particular bump.  Number one.

2. //MINATO-KU// TOKYO 12.27 AM http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/58
Another location bump.  Maybe it's the blurriness and washed out look of the photos mixed with the moody music, but I've always liked these.

3. Fun 4 Adults http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/75
This one I can put my finger on.  It preceded Ghost in the Shell, my favorite AS show to date, when I saw the series for the first time, so my mind associates the two rather fondly.

4. GITS:SAC 2nd Gig - Now http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/991
See above.  I do like the way this one is put together too.

5. FMA Balloons v2 http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/5
I like this one more for the way it's put together than for the show association, though I did enjoy FMA.  I like how the show title appears on the banner late as it's scrolled halfway off the screen, almost like an afterthought.  As an aside... the last two bumps remind me of something Cartoon Network in my opinion used to do really well, but seems to have dropped the ball on lately -- and that's promote its own shows.  I think that's a missed opportunity.

6. Best Things are Collectives http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1791
There were a chunk of bumps debuting around this same time period that I enjoyed.

7. Traffic http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1829
This one is a bit of a departure from the previous, and I list it mainly for the Dilla track.

8. ACTN Green One Handed Guy http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1805
Weird ACTN characters, good image and music, short and doesn't really have to say anything -- more or less what a bump should be.

9. Expired http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/110
I guess I do like blurry, washed out photos.  Really like the look and especially music on this one.

10. AcTN Cargo Ship http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/491
Kept trying to convince myself this bump shouldn't be in my top ten, but what can I say?  I don't know what exactly grabs me, but I've always liked this one.  Definitely a good track.

Honorable Mention:

German Flight Schedule v2 http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/356
Something with Mandeer must be mentioned, as it is the first song from a bump I ever tried to look up... and what brought me originally to [BumpWorthy]... isn't that nice.  :-)

2001 Pool #10 http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/139
A classic pool bump, and really the only one I can remember seeing on air.  Straight legs!

You Could Be Here http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1832
As much as I tried, I couldn't fit it into my top ten.

//ASAKUSA// TOKYO 02.55 PM http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1788
Neato picture.

And three I never saw until I was browsing through and tagging bumps, thus no nostalgia factor, but I still like quite a bit:

Witch Hunter Robin Intro http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1251
This one I really, really like.  Top ten worthy if I'd ever really seen it and let it grow on me.  Put together well from start to finish.  And, uh... was Witch Hunter Robin really ever on AS...?

Evangelion - Intro 2 http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/113
I'm one of the six people in the world who've never seen this show, but I like the bump.

Futurama Bending Shadows http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/210
Don't recall ever seeing it, but I just like the look and feel of this one.

If you made it this far, thanks for taking a look at my list.  Great question and topic, was fun trying to answer it.

Hell yeah! It's all good, that's part of the idea :-D.

You got a really nice list going on! I've always had a kind of attachment to Expired and Inferiority Complex Entrance, pretty much because I remembered not taping them and then found them much later on one of the DVDs my friend gave me (and then later Beefy gave us some awesome remasters). But they're both great pics and paired perfectly. I agree with you on the AcTN Green Hand! It's not specifically about nothing, and that's one of the things that make it so cool. Very nice bump, a definite classic. Best Things are Collective is a classic too. Another Golden Era [as] bump. I miss those kinda bumps, and the ever-awesome scrolls (well, and the anime...). Glad to see another GitS fan! :-D Love the show, and they had some really cool bumps with it. And the Tokyo snaps are always pure gold. I really liked the German Flight Schedule because it was very original for a schedule bump. I'm diggin' the new ones airing now because they have some great pictures, but this was a very different way to present them and I really appreciate that. Regarding Witch Hunter Robin, yeah, it was on in 2004 :-P. I don't think it lasted the year though. I remember watching it in the spring.  I'm pretty surprised you'd never seen the Bending Shadows bump! We used to get a lot of questions about that one. Always liked those Futurama bumps... and Futurama . I would say if you get the chance to watch Evangelion, give it a go. It's mighty entertaining. Some peeps complain about the ending but I personally thought it was really good.

Thanks for the comments, Mongo.

About Witch Hunter Robin, there was actually a year in there where I didn't watch much CN, or TV at all... must've been 2004 when the show was on.  Some day I'll have to pick that and Evangelion up.  The Bender bump... I've watched a bit of Futurama, but just don't remember seeing that one on TV.  Bad luck, I guess.

FYI, to a fellow GitS fan, there are faint rumors that a 3rd GIG is at least being considered.  Was several months ago that I read about it, and I think this (http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0867649/) is where I saw it.  If that were to happen, I'd be one happy individual.

As I recall, 'Bending Shadows' was reserved for Saturday's airing.

Yes, WHR was 2004... got a bum rap if you ask me. Not enough action for some peeps, I guess.

3rd Gig would be AWESOME!  :-o

I just looked at my avatar and after April Fools it's even funnier to me

Well, I am a HUGE fan of the //Tokyo bumps.  Whenever I think of [adult swim], I think of them and the awesome music they all have.  I could very easily fill my entire top 10 list with those, but I'll try not to.  :p  Most of these bumps are pretty old now.  I like them because they remind me of the "good old days" of [adult swim] when they played more anime and had a better "vision" for their bumps.  Maybe it just boils down to them having a better graphics designer or something, but I just love the art style they used during that time period.  Whenever I think of [adult swim], I think of that time and remember when the bumps used to be GOOD :)  Obviously, I loved these bumps so much that I decided to start a website for them, and here we are today :p

#10.  Venture Bros Super Science (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/292)
A classic bump all around.  Love the music.

#09.  Super Milk Chan 25c (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/7)
Am I the only one who misses Super Milk Chan?  :D  大人の楽しみ!

#08.  Cowboy Bebop Sherrif Star (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/31)
Favorite anime + nice art style.

#07.  Boondocks - You Will Watch (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/200)
NOW!

#06.  Inuyasha Intro (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1248)
Awesome artwork and flow in this one.  Very similar to Witch Hunter Robin Intro (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1251) which I really like as well.

#05.  Come Along Friend (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/11)
<3 Psyche Origami

#04.  Bear in the Forest ACTN (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1)
Love the art style in this series, and the music fits really well.

#03.  //SHINJUKU-KU// TOKYO 07.16 AM (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1819)
Love the setting.  This one's been my desktop wallpaper for about five years now... :p

#02.  Bear with Chainsaw Film (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/2)
I love the vibe of this bump.  Again, the music just fits perfectly.

#01.  //SHINJUKU-KU// TOKYO 04.15 PM (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/61)
I always think of this bump as sort of "defining" [adult swim] for me.  Definitely my favorite of the //Tokyo series.

Honorable Mentions:

//ASAKUSA// TOKYO 06.20 PM (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/55)
Very chill beat and setting.

Rescue Lion (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1862)

Samurai Champloo - Fuu (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1906)
Another favorite anime and dig the music.

Big O Intro (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1245)
Good music.

Pink Lady (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/667)
This one used to have different music.  I think it may have been Psyche Origami, but I'm not sure.  I liked that other version better, but this image is classic [adult swim] for me. :)

I wish we had a favorite PROMO thread, so I could list all the GITS and Cowboy Bebop promos

And that's why I love http://asfdotcom.net/ because I couldn't find them anywhere else.

9 ) AcTN Train (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/496)
One of my top 2 favorite transportation theme bumps.

8 ) Airplanes (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1786)
My favorite of the transportation theme bumps.

Good picks.  I like both of these very much as well.  The Venture Bros. one that also made crab's list I'd never taken much notice of, but after seeing it again, I like it too.

What is it about this one that caught your eye, especially?  If you're able to put it into words.

Why must you make me choose only 10?

I know, it was really hard for me as well :-P.

Man, I miss those tilt-shift AcTN transportation bumps. Really cool stuff, unexpected. Es Muy Fuerte rules, love the setting and the way it watches with the music... and the "strong guy" art . Picture Shows should've definitely been aired more than a few times. Really different from all the other bumps, the good ol' fiddle track works perfect with the image. Before I knew that it was a library track, I was determined to get a disc for the "Hi Praise" song. It's so hypnotic and strange, always remember that beat, and the image in the bump really goes well with it. And I agree on the Dance Time bump, the matching of the movements and beats is awesomesauce.

Whenever I think of [adult swim], I think of that time and remember when the bumps used to be GOOD :)  Obviously, I loved these bumps so much that I decided to start a website for them, and here we are today :-p

The older bumps were definitely a lot better. No hate on the new bumps, the guys do a great job, but I agree with what you said about them having a better vision and concept. Oh, and, as Peanut would say... "Master!!"

I miss the hell out of Milk Chan! One of my favorite [as] shows, usually the one that made my friends go "wtf is wrong with you?". Glad I bought the DVDs, still watch it a lot. Cowboy Bebop is a really stellar anime (my 2nd favorite :-D) and that bump definitely did it justice. The Oh No beat is amazing too. Love the Boondocks one too, very different from the actual show but it's just really good. I am really glad those InuYasha and Witch Hunter Robin bumps were posted, I don't remember watching them on TV and they were great. Come Along Friend was one of those bumps I used to replay a million times a while ago, still one of the coolest bumps I've seen! It'd be nice to have a few new scroll bumps, wouldn't it? :-P. Bear in the Forest is awesomesauce! I remember being really excited when I saw that back when I first found BumpWorthy. The photography on the Tokyo series is amazing. I'm pretty sure the Tokyo bumps are what comes to mind when anybody thinks "[adult swim]"; they were really iconic. I really dug the look of Bear with Chainsaw Film and Bull Film Reel. It's just dark and weird, very creative stuff and really memorable. However, Bull with Chainsaw Film has the perfect music for the image. I love Collective Efforts, and this is one of the songs that introduced me to them. Rescue Lion is a really cool bump; great shot and concept and a really nice beat. I think Samurai Champloo is the last great anime I saw on [adult swim] (I really wanted to see Death Note and Moribito, but they murdered Moribito in scheduling and I forgot about Death Note's timeslot since I hadn't been watching [adult swim] in it for quite a while). Banana Clip Vol 3 is one of those albums that I hate being unable to find. I've been searching for a while and always hit a dead end :|. Didn't remember that about the Pink Lady bump, if I find any info I'll update.

Haha.. I really can't find the words to describe it.  Chances are, it probably aired right before one of my favorite shows, so I would always associate that particular bump with a really good show, and get that "warm, fuzzy" feeling whenever I saw it.  Does anyone else get that feeling whenever they see a bump or hear a song used on [as]?  After a while you just start to associate the music with certain shows.  It's a pretty cool effect IMO.  I wish I could find bump listings from way back then.  Other than that, I think a lot of it has to do with the choice of image (the color scheme in particular), and the music.  I used to ride around in my car listening to Psyche O all the time.  I was shocked when one day I found out that they were actually coming to play a show here in my tiny little town in Mississippi.  They put on a really awesome show to a crowd of about 40 people.  I was probably the only one in there who knew who they were :)  And I got to meet them after the show and got them to sign their flyer.  They wrote something like "Keep on watchin' adult swim - Psyche Origami" on it.  It's crazy, but I associate all these things with that one song and that one bump.   :-)

Makes perfect sense to me.

I mentioned I have that same feeling about the particular bump that preceded GitS season 1 the first time I watched it on AS.  In my mind, it's almost natural for the opening theme of the show to just follow along after the end of the bump.  I really fell in love with that show the first time I saw it, and there's definitely a positive association between the bump and the show... almost like it's in a sense part of the show to me.  Hearing the bump in my mind always built anticipation for that opening theme.

It's cool to know that same phenomenon happens with others.  Anyone else?

Wow, I would've loved to see that! I came around to getting the Psyche O, Collective Efforts and Minamina Goodsong albums later on, and I really hope I get to see them live (severely doubt that's gonna happen here, but when I can afford it I'd take a trip to watch a good show). I know Minamina split  but still have hope for Psyche O and CE.

Indeed, same here with me. Fun4Adults (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/75) and We'd Like to See You Try (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/1816) are clear examples, GITS association as well  :-D. Believe it or not that was the strangest part of watching the show on DVD.

Oh YEAH...! Fun4Adults (http://www.bumpworthy.com/bumps/75) + GITS = <3
I had almost forgotten.

Oh how I love the GITS opening...  and the promos for it on [as].  Soooo good!
