Title: [SITE NEWS] Coming Soon - major changes (updated Oct 13, '06)
Post by: crab on September 13, 2006, 07:28:43 PM
--EDIT-- This portion of the upgrade is complete.

So, here's what's in the woodwork right now:

All bumps will be shown in a Flash player.  And I will no longer be the only one able to post bumps.  Users will be able to submit Adult Swim official bumps, as well as their own creations, and all will be shown on the site.  In order to facilitate this, the process will go like this:  1)  You must have an account here on the boards to upload a bump, 2) You will log in, and then submit your bump through a web form, 3) Your bump will be moved to a temporary location, where it will be approved or denied by site moderators (as a security and accuracy means), 4) After approval, your bump will be shown live on the site.

Right now, I can say that the acceptable formats for submissions will be as follows: AVI (divx/xvid, etc), OGG, MP(E)G, MOV (quicktime), ASF, WMV (hopefully), and RM (real media).  -- with possibly more as I test things out - suggestions are also welcome.  These will also be able to accept a broad range of audio codecs as well.  It is my belief that this will cover the vast majority of video/audio formats commonly used, so that users will be able to upload most any kind of movie file they have.

Additionally, there will no longer be a "user submission" section, because ALL bumps will be user submissions from here on.

This whole project will require some time on my part, and I welcome any "regulars" here, with good PHP programming experience, to step up.  I may have some things you could do - but no guarantees.

Other things that are in the works are:

So, you may be wondering how things are going so far, because I've posted a couple times saying I am working on things.  Here is the progress report so far, and what is left to do:
[DONE 09/13] Create upload form for bumps
[DONE 09/13] Install software to decode/encode bump videos for the site
[DONE 09/28] Script to process/decode/encode uploaded bumps and hand them off to the approval process
[DONE 10/11] Build the Flash player
[DONE 10/04] Create the approval page for moderators
[DONE 10/13] -- probably 100 unforseen things --

Feel free to comment below.

Sounds really rad!! I would really like to advocate for downloadable bumps but that doesn't seem to be the case I guess? Maybe a thread should be kept for downloading purposes, as in someone uploads to say upload.sc if they think it's ok?

That's a good question.

I think it will be easy enough to still have downloadable bumps.  I actually didn't plan on changing that part - video and audio clips will still be available for download.

...just got an idea!

You should put a LOGIN on the main site so you wont have to login into the fourms....

For the Memebers: just a regular login (send messages to other members, mods, creator of the site, uploqd your own bumps, rate other peoples bumps)

For the Mods/Creator of the Site: When you login, you get to update the news section , send messages, update the site (If you know how to with all the HTMLs and stuff, and anything else important)ook over the uploaded bumps/ review them/ approve them.

...any more comments are suggestion from anyone else will be taken into consideration....

Whaddya got in mind for catagorizing/searching of the bumps? How hard would a meta tag system be? I'd be happy to do the actual 'tagging' if it's feasible...  :?

Not much in that area right now.  So far the only categorizations are Adult Swim and User Original.  At this instant, I can envision a much grander scheme, but it won't be in the works for a little while (a few weeks perhaps).  great idea

Assuming I get some time tonight, the Flash player will be done and I could open the site back up, but there wouldn't be any bumps.

So until the old stuff is converted to the Flash system, the site will be locked.

Ok, the Flash player is in place and functioning.  I just need to convert all the old bumps now.  I should be able to write a script to do that so you all can expect to see the new stuff tomorrow!

Will future bumps be in flash only, or will there still be the option to download the avi version?

If the avi versions will still be available, if people have DivX, can we use it, or do you want the avi files to be Xvid only?

Currently, all of the bumps are shown in Flash on the web, and are available for download as AVI/MP3 just as they used to be (check for the links underneath the "Music Details" section below the flash player.

Regarding downloads: The AVIs are encoded using the Xvid codec, which, as far as I know, can be decoded with the DivX decoder.

Regarding uploads: You can upload videos encoded with a wide variety of formats, including DivX.  They will be converted to Xvid during the upload process, though.

Here's a full list of supported codecs.  Of main interest are the first three codes/columns visible for each line.  The codes are as follows: D = decode, E = encode, V = video, A = audio, the rest are useless.  If a codec has a D in the first column, it can be decoded, and you can use it in your uploads.  For example, the line " DEVSD  wmv2" means the software can decode video coded in the 'wmv2' codec.

FYI, I am working on getting the AAC audio decoder installed so that you can upload Quicktime videos. It can decode the video, but not the audio  :|
